CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: Mr. Stewart serves is the Deputy Assistant Secretary of War (Acting) for Space and Missile Defense Policy—with responsibilities for overseeing national security space and missile defense priorities within the Office of the Secretary of War. His responsibilities include the review and development of space and missile defense policies and priorities, including strategy development; commercial, allies, and partner integration/engagement; PPBE priorities; and sensitive authorities and operations oversight.

PAST EXPERIENCE: Mr. Stewart brings nearly 20 years of experience that spans the range of the United States most pressing and intractable global security challenges—from the global war on terror to great power competition in the Indo-Pacific.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Stewart served as Principal Director for the Office of Space and Missile Defense Policy and Director of the Office of Space Partnerships, within the Office of the ASW for Space Policy. In this role, he supported the Assistant Secretary of War for Space Policy in his statutory role as DoW’s overall policy lead for space warfighting, provided executive leadership and policy oversight regarding the War Departments efforts to field a U.S. national security space architecture and force posture that effectively leverages international, commercial, intelligence, and civil partner space resources and capabilities to enhance resilience and mission effectiveness.

Mr. Stewart began his civil service and defense career as a Presidential Management Fellow in 2009. Since joining the Department, he has served in key jobs in support of Presidential and Secretary-level priorities, including as Director for the Office of Korean Affairs, Senior Desk Officer in the Office of Europe and NATO, and desk officer for Afghanistan, Israel, and the occupied Palestinian Territories.

Mr. Stewart has twice received the OSW Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service and is a three-time recipient of the OSW Group Recognition Award for his team’s efforts. Additionally, he has been recognized by allied governments for his success in advancing key burden-sharing initiatives internationally, including a Meritorious Service Commendation from the Republic of Korea's Defense Minister and an Outstanding Achievement Commendation from the United Kingdom’s British Defense Staff – United States.

EDUCATION: Mr. Stewart holds a master’s degree in political management from The George Washington University and a bachelor’s in political science from Mississippi State University.
