The Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs (OATSW(PA)) advises the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of War on issues related to public information, internal information, community relations, social media, trademarks and the DOW Brand Guide.

The Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs (ATSW(PA)) leads this office and is often dual-hatted as the department’s press secretary, which is the department’s chief spokesperson, providing timely and accurate information to the public, Congress and the news media.

In providing Department of War information to the public, the Congress and the media, public affairs personnel follow the secretary’s Principles of Information.

OATSW(PA) MISSION STATEMENT

OATSW(PA) serves as DOW's voice to the world, delivering timely and accurate information on DOW policies, operations, and activities; trusted advice and counsel to DOW leaders; and communication planning and synchronization. Through transparent, strategic engagement, and the development of communication policies, plans, and guidance, OATSW(PA) fosters trust and confidence that enables DOW efforts.

DOW Public Affairs Internship Program

The Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs (OATSW(PA)) seeks college students for our volunteer internship program, which is an unpaid student internship program managed by the Washington Headquarters Service. Students would work in the headquarters office for DOW Public Affairs. As DOW’s voice to the world, our public affairs team delivers timely and accurate information about DOW’s efforts, advises DOW leaders on communication planning and synchronization, and conducts community and industry engagements to foster trust and confidence in the department.

Interns will work in the Pentagon in one of our key areas, including:

  • Community Engagement
  • Digital Media
  • Strategic Planning and Assessments
  • Press Operations
  • Policy and Executive Services

  • Current college/university enrollment
  • Minimum six-week commitment (eight weeks preferred)
  • Ability to pass security investigation
  • Strong writing and communication skills
