Marc J. Berkowitz

Assistant Secretary of War for Space Policy

 

Marc J. Berkowitz serves as the Assistant Secretary of War for Space Policy.  In this capacity, he is responsible for supervision of Department of War space warfighting policy matters.  His duties include leading the analysis, planning, formulation, coordination, and oversight of the implementation of U.S. Government and War Department policy, guidance, and strategy for the conduct of space and missile defense activities.

Prior to assuming his current role, he was an independent consultant and advisor to public and private sector clients as President of Incisive Consulting Group.  Previously, Mr. Berkowitz served for nearly twenty years as a Vice President and Director at Lockheed Martin Corporation where he was responsible for thought leadership, strategy formulation, and strategic planning.  Concurrently, he was a special government employee, senior advisor, or consultant to the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community.

In addition, Mr. Berkowitz served as the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Space Policy and Director of Space Policy as a career senior executive in the Office of the Secretary of Defense from the end of the Cold War to the Global War on Terror.  In that role, he was responsible for the development, coordination, and oversight of U.S. Government and Department of Defense policy and guidance for space activities.  Mr. Berkowitz also previously worked at the Department of State, Congressional Research Service, SRI International, and National Institute for Public Policy/National Security Research.

Mr. Berkowitz is the recipient of the Department of Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Award with oak leaf cluster, National Reconnaissance Office Medal for Distinguished Service, National Imagery and Mapping Agency Medal for Distinguished Service, Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive, Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award, Office of the Secretary of Defense Exceptional Civilian Service Award, Office of the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence as well as the National Space Club’s Historical Essay Award and Lockheed Martin’s Washington, Government Affairs, and Space Technical Innovation Awards. 

Mr. Berkowitz received a Master of Arts degree from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction from George Washington University. He was awarded membership in Pi Sigma Alpha as both a graduate and undergraduate student.  Mr. Berkowitz is widely published and has lectured extensively around the world about defense and security matters.
