Ms. Julia Sokol is Performing the Duties of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for International Security Affairs (ISA). In this role, she is the Principal Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of War responsible for international security strategy and policy for Europe (including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization), the Middle East, and Africa. She holds leadership, policy management, and advisory responsibilities across ISA’s expansive portfolio.

Ms. Sokol is a career member of the Senior Executive Service with the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Policy. Previous assignments include Executive Director for the Office of Information Operations Policy, Principal Director for Irregular Warfare and Counterterrorism, Director for Middle East Levant and Gulf Policy, Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, strategist for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman’s Action Group, as well as Country Director for Pakistan, the Balkans, and NATO.

Ms. Sokol is a Distinguished Graduate of the National War College and the recipient of the Secretary of Defense Award for Meritorious Civilian Service among other awards.
